Lambda Plates

Aluminum plates of different thickness to investigate the influence of thin layers upon the reflection and transmission of ultrasonic waves
(Currently not available)

Sound waves are partially or entirely reflected at the boundary of two materials with different characteristic acoustic impedances. Here, the amplitude and phase of the reflected sound waves and the sound waves passing through can change. The reflected and/or transmitted part of the sound energy can be described by the reflection and/or transmission coefficient. Particularly interesting effects occur during passing through thin layers the thickness of which lies in the range of the wavelength of the ultrasonic waves (λ/4, λ/2 and their multiples). These effects can be investigated with this plate set.

Material: aluminium
Sound velocity (longitudinal): ≈ 6400 m/s
Thickness of plates: ≈ λ/4, λ/2, 3/4λ and λ (1 MHz)
